Affordances and Connectivity in PLNs

Technology has changed the way we connect with others, especially when it comes to building our Personal Learning Networks (PLNs). I think one of the biggest advantages of digital PLNs is that they allow us to connect with people we might never meet in person. However, I also think that face-to-face connections offer opportunities that digital platforms cannot always replicate.

For example, I use LinkedIn to build and maintain my professional network. Through my co-op experiences in healthcare and biotechnology, I have met people from different organizations and professional backgrounds. LinkedIn allows me to stay connected with these individuals even after my placements have ended. It also recommends people based on my existing connections and interests, which makes it easier to expand my network. This connects to what we learned about affordances, as the design of a platform influences how we interact with others and who we are likely to connect with.

However, I think there are also limitations to digital PLNs. If platforms mainly recommend people with similar interests or backgrounds, we might miss opportunities to hear different perspectives. This connects to our previous discussions about diversity and inclusion, where we explored how important it is to learn from people with different experiences. In comparison, I find that face-to-face connections often feel more natural. During my co-op placements, I have had conversations with coworkers from different departments who I likely would not have connected with through LinkedIn. These interactions allowed me to learn about different roles and experiences that I might not have otherwise considered.

Overall, I think both digital and face-to-face PLNs have their strengths. Digital platforms make it easier to maintain and expand connections, while in-person interactions can lead to more spontaneous conversations and relationships. I think using both is important for developing a well-rounded PLN.
